Look Up presents

17 April to 26 May 2019

Private view Tuesday 14 May, 6.30–9pm

Featuring work by Jason Hawkridge and Josie Molloy, Brutal Beauty is the first in a series of exhibitions pairing printmaking talent from the Look Up roster (Josie) with artists (in this case, Jason) who live and/or work in Waltham Forest – the inaugural London Borough of Culture in 2019. Brutal Beauty provides a showcase for their individual talents whilst hinting at common ground. Geometry, colour and an interest in modernism – the Bauhaus and brutalism in particular – brutalist architecture and the Bauhaus – are some of the many threads that link their aesthetic tendencies. Whilst they clearly share a passion for the creative potential of printmaking, Brutal Beauty also succeeds in celebrating the process-driven idiosyncrasies and vibrant dynamism of each artists’ work.

All prints featured in this exhibition are available to buy.

Josie Molloy

Based in London, Josie joined the Look Up roster in 2016 shortly after completing a prestigious Printmaking Fellowship at the Royal Academy. A valued print technician at the Wimbledon School of Art and London College of Communications (LCC), Josie also runs Screen Grab, a pop-up screenprinting studio specialising in workshops and cultural events. Fascinated by the Bauhaus, brutalist architecture, Black Mountain College and Ben Nicholson, her work explores texture, light and architectural form. Her love of screenprinting has much to do with the physicality of its process. This reveals itself in her uplifting prints, which combine vibrant blocks of colour with textural elements such as fluid brush marks, rubbings and collaged stencils.

Jason Hawkridge

With a background in graphic design and illustration, Jason is a full-time multidisciplinary artist with a keen eye for colour and an infectious passion for creativity. He lives and works in Walthamstow, where he also runs a life-drawing class. Painting, drawing, printmaking and wall effects are among the various mediums Jason uses to explore his approach to colour, texture and composition. Widely acclaimed in their own right, his vibrant murals have led to site-specific commissions with internationally acclaimed artists such as Lothar Gotz and Rebecca Salter. His collaborations with developers and interior designers have been widely published, and his cutting-edge distressed walls feature in homes, bars, restaurants and luxury developments across the UK.
